Equity is defined as freedom from bias or favoritism. This is freedom that should be awarded to everyone. Regardless of their background and/or inherent differences. But far too often, we as humans, cast wide assumptions fueled by stereotypes and biases. These assumptions create a misunderstanding of what is considered “normal” or “appropriate” or “comfortable” in today’s society. This is the root of the challenge we face as leaders in the diversity, equity and inclusion space. And it is also the catalyst behind our mission to “humanize equity.” But what does it mean to humanize equity?
“Amy Schneider Is Proud to Be ‘Jeopardy!’ Trans Champion”
“Sofia Jirau makes history as Victoria’s Secret first model with Down syndrome”
“Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmed as the first Black woman to sit on US Supreme Court”
These recent headlines hold the answer to the real meaning behind humanizing equity and its growing fervor across all groups. Amy, Sofía and Ketanji are just three of the trailblazers, leaders, and humans who have defied stereotypes and biases to achieve their dreams. They are individuals of historically marginalized groups who have been catapulted to the headlines and television screens across a nation and world. The conversations these headlines invoke work to normalize difference and pave a path towards much needed equality.
Because until we see ourselves as equals we can not successfully co-exist as humans. It’s time to make real change. Our Humanizing Equity initiative is positioned to change the lens in which we see each other. It stems from our decades of work led by Vernā.
